Traditional Semi Detached Home

Birmingham

In September 2022 Environmental Systems Ltd supported a Client who occupied a traditional semi detached home and wanted to reduce their energy usage.

After risk assessing the project, the Environmental Systems Ltd Retrofit Coordinator arranged a retrofit survey on behalf of the Client which gathered key data about the homes energy efficiency, condition, and occupancy.

The survey identified several features that the Retrofit Coordinator needed to be aware of when they were reviewing the improvement options for the design and installation phase of the project.

For example, during the survey it was concluded that the home had a vapour open design, this meant that moisture travelled through the building fabric (i.e. walls, floor and roof). If the home had non permeable insulation materials installed, then there would be a risk that moisture would become trapped in the home; leading to damp and mould growth. To mitigate this risk the Coordinator ensured that the improvement options would be vapour permeable, meaning that the insulating material would provide an improved level of insulation and allow the continued movement of moisture across the building fabric.

The Retrofit Coordinator and Client agreed that measures aimed at improving the performance of the building fabric would be the best way to reduce the energy usage of the home. This included changing their windows and insulating their walls and floors.

The Client is now benefiting from a more energy efficient home with less heat loss through the windows, walls, and floor; reducing the demand for energy and lowering running cost. They are now considering the installation of an air source heat pump as part of the next package of efficiency improvements.
